Now here’s one of those crazy far-out unlikely tales of Science Fiction: l am proud and excited and somewhat baffled to announce that I will be attending the Clarion 2010 Writer’s Workshop!

  1. Congrats. Clarion is exclusive, expensive, and I would consider it a great honor to attend. Think George RR Martin is at one of them I have looked at other workshops and writer’s bootcamps, but haven’t been able to tear myself away from my other duties to attend one.

I have been working on a manuscript in a virtual vacuum for the last few years and wish to improve my writing. Best of luck on your future endeavors, and if you wish to share some of what you learn at Clarion I would be very interested.

  2. Doug, thanks for the congrats! I see you are an archeologist (amongst many other things)! My first published story, which was in the April/May 2010 issue Asimov’s, was based around archeology. I am a complete amateur — most of my research came from National Geographic and TV documentaries — so my apologies if I got everything wrong!

Yeah, George RR Martin will be teaching us the second week at Clarion in San Diego. I can’t wait! I have been re-reading a stack of his books and stories in preparation.

Clarion is expensive, but they do have scholarships available, all the way up to 100% covered, so don’t let that be an obstacle.

I am going to try to keep a journal of my Clarion experience, which I will post here for sure. But it’s also worth checking out some of the forums and bulletin boards for fantasy writers; there are a lot of generous folks out there willing to share tips about writing. For example, here’s one huge list of links (almost too huge!)

I’ll search through my bookmarks and post some more sites that I have found useful. Regards, and keep writing!
